- Our Alaska Experience -

Northern Lights, Fairbanks Alaska at about 3:30 am Jan 2002

Northern Lights using 30 sec shutter speed on Kodak 800 film. There are 3 individual bands but after 30
sec they look like a big blob.  Note the silhouette of the trees at the base of the lights! These bands were huge!

Krista and I went to Anchorage, Alaska in the winter of 2001-2002 for one of our school's externship. Alaska in the winter, What!! I thought Krista was crazy but it turned out to be one of the best times we have had! Seeing the northern lights, which by the way MOVE, was the highlight of the entire trip. We would spend countless nights "camping out" in yet another rented car watching for them! Just Beautiful! We plan to return in the winter for another glance at nature. The winter in Alaska was MUCH better then any winter I have seen in Chicago. Yeah, I wouldn't have believed it either! The air is much drier so the snow doesn't stick to your face. There is little traffic and moose and bald eagles flying around. It's just beautiful!! And to top it off, you have the Northern Lights!

211.JPG (12995 bytes)It's Fur Rendezvous!! One of the snow sculptures from the competition! Neat  NLairplane.JPG (9893 bytes)Here is another picture of the northern lights! The scanner did a horrible job and I tried to touch it up a bit :) The real picture is just beautiful! Again, Olympus camera, Kodak 800 film and 30 sec exposure. This picture is taken at 3:45 am in freezing weather! I think it was -20F out and the camera would start to show signs of freezing after being out a few mins! The streak of light is an airplane taking off! That is the airport we landed at, the Anchorage airport.  2-1-02 NLairplane1.JPG (15372 bytes)Here is a picture of Krista and I! I used a flash on this picture and it came out pretty good. Man it was COLD!!! This is the SAME streak as the picture before but has changed shape. Remember they move! Amazing!

waterfall.JPG (31211 bytes)It's a frozen waterfall...they are everywhere! The commercial for Gorilla Fireworks played non-stop and before we knew it most of the song was stuck in our heads! P1010002.JPG (33336 bytes)It's a Musk Ox! Interesting "little" animals with a lot of "fur!" Man, it was cold that day but they didn't seem to care! Krista is trying not to get her hand eaten :)
denny.JPG (18906 bytes)We went to the Most Northern Denny's after staying up all night in our rented PT Cruiser.
Funny! Man where we tired.
P1010004.JPG (15467 bytes)It's a black wolf in Denali National Park!  It walked about 30 feet from our car! No body would of believed us without this picture that we actually saw one in real life! pipeline.JPG (16679 bytes)Its the Alyeska Pipeline! It's real hehehe! Its over 800 miles long connecting Prudhoe Bay to Valdez!! Lots of oil running through this thing. gorilla.JPG (16224 bytes)
"He's been beating on his chest because he knows that he's the best...He's the Magilla, the Fireworks Gorilla, a King Kong Gorilla, a pyrotechnic thrilla, so when your looking for excitement on the forth of July, gorilla fireworks and you are gonna light up the sky...happy new year!"
